We are going to Arendalsuka 15 – 19 August! Innovation leader in Climate Futures, Øyvind Paasche, will discuss the topic Serial Disasters. The event, arranged by NORCE, takes place Tuesday 16 August, 08.30-09.30 onboard the boat “Vision of the Fjords“, upper deck.
About the event:
The summer of 2018 was the driest since 1947. Crops were lost all over Europe, and forest fires ravaged.
The summer of 2021 was the warmest ever. At the same time, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands experienced extreme floods with over 200 fatalities and damages of over 270 billion NOK. The record heat also led to little wind, and the power prices continued to rise, with unknown negative consequences in other markets.
The increased danger of severe natural hazards that often follow each other closely, or even happen simultaneously, demands new acquisition and management of knowledge. It also requires upgraded risk management. This meeting will focus on how society can, and should, adapt to a new climate reality, where disasters are not the exception, but rather a part of the new reality.
